The MCR Committee

The MCR has a particularly active Committee, drawn from the members of the MCR.  The Committee runs most of the aspects of student life and deals with everything from social events to ensuring that MCR operates an environmentally friendly recycling system.  The committee members are elected in accordance with the MCR Constitution and it holds regular meetings which all MCR members are invited to attend.  Public minutes are recorded at all of the MCR Committee meetings.  The current MCR Committee members are:

Committee 2008-2009

President:
Anna Lewis

The MCR committee are the group elected to help keep Balliol's the most fun, most inclusive, friendliest MCR in Oxford, and help make it as wonderful a community to be a part of as possible. My job is to keep that show on the road through being the "ultimate administrator" (constitution speak for sending lots of emails, going to lots of meetings, etc). That includes responding to any concerns/suggestions MCR members may have. Please do be in touch. It also includes chairing our meetings, these will be advertised, please do attend, as they're a good opportunity to let us know what else we can be doing for you. I'm also a first year doctoral research, second year grad, sixth year Balliol-ite doing physics/biology/stats/maths. Exceptionally for the MCR Pres, I'm a Brit.

Treasurer:
Maike Kaufman

Maike is a German Engineer, reading for a DPhil in Robotics. As Treasurer she'll be in charge of guarding the cheque book and overseeing the budget, fueled by her love for spreadsheets. When she's not geeking out over numbers, she can probably be found somewhere around the Megaron or North Wing.

Secretary:
Mike Pitcher

I'm the MCR's very own secretary, which means I take care of all things meeting-related – I'll tell you when they happen, what's being discussed, and record the minutes so that if you're not there you'll still know what happened. When I'm not doing this I'm most likely to be found studying chemistry, but I also spend a lot of time kicking footballs around, and occasionally you'll see me in the bar.

Bar Manager:
Jon Selby

As Bar Manager, I'm in charge of buying a range of delicious and exciting things for the Megaron bar. As members of Balliol MCR you're in charge of enjoying them. Simple really.
Any ideas, suggestions, personal favourite products then drop me an email. Look out for bar events throughout the year.

One third of Social Secretary Team:
Aelwen Wetherby

Aelwen is excited and proud to be one third of the Balliol MCR's new social secretary team for 2008-2009. Having started as an M.Sc. student in the History of Science and Medicine, Aelwen couldn't bear to leave Balliol's fabulous graduate community after just one year. She'll now be working towards completing the M.Phil. in the same course while ensuring the Manor has a full and exciting social calendar. Originally from Alaska, Aelwen has many years of experience in planning fun distractions to get you through a dark and drizzly English winter! Feel free to contact her -- or either of her social secretary co-conspirators -- with any questions, concerns, or ideas regarding MCR social events.

Another third of Social Secretary Team:
Mary Hartley Platt

I am reading for an MPhil in Classics, and (more importantly!) I am one of your three new social secretaries. Ever since my arrival in Fresher's Week 2007, the Balliol MCR has been my favorite thing about Oxford, and I am excited and honored to help make it wonderful this coming year too. Please contact me (or Aelwen or Adam) whenever you like with your ideas and concerns. I can't wait to spend time with all of you!

Final third of Social Secretary Team:
Adam Willans

Balliol has a reputation for being one of the best graduate communities and we're here to keep it that way. Any comments, suggestions or enquiries, please get in touch. See you in the Megaron.

Domestic Rep:
David Louk

Following in a long and grand line of North American Domestic Reps, David Louk will continue the policing of dirty dishes in the manor armed with political correctness, inappropriately loud conversations, and dual-loaded CAPS LOCK KEYS. In addition to his full-time job lamenting the paucity of Oxford culinary bright spots, he is responsible for any maintenance and domestic concerns and happy to address other questions or needs. He strongly recommends befriending (and/or bribing) Pauline as early in the year as possible. Oh, and he's a second year in the MPhil in International Relations.

Welfare Rep.:
Jenn Reuer

I'm a 2nd year D.Phil student in Medieval English, but have been in Oxford long enough to develop a bizarre US-UK hybrid accent. As your friendly MCR Welfare Rep, I get to unleash my inner mad scientist in the form of post-bop mass catering, and scout out the latest delights for the welfare cupboard. Most importantly, I'm here as your first port of call for welfare issues. Whether you just want to chat over a cup of tea, or need further information on various support networks, please feel free to get in touch.

Sports Rep.:
Alex Heath

DPhil Chemistry 3rd Year. I'm a firm believer that a healthy body means a healthy mind. It's my job to answer any sports related questions and to ensure that the relevant equipment is available for MCR members. Sport for all!

Environment Rep.:
Doireann Lalor

Hi, I'm Doireann. I'm doing a DPhil in Italian literature. It's my job to coordinate recycling in Holywell Manor, and to make Balliol MCR as GREEN as possible!

Women's Officer:
Caroline Howitt

Caroline's role is to ensure that the views of female Balliolites are represented to the MCR committee. She also provides pastoral care and, according to whim, the occasional brunch.

Web/Email Officer:
Jarrod Hepburn

I'm doing an MPhil in Law. I update the MCR website and run the MCR mail-list, and I also represent your views on the Computing Committee meeting with College each term. Come to me for general issues or queries about what computing facilities Balliol provides, and what facilities you would find helpful.

For specific computing problems, contact Adrian, the MCR Computing Officer.

OUSU/JCR Rep.:
Keon West

I act as a go-between for the MCR and JCR as well as representing the MCR and its interests on JCR committee and OUSU committee. I hope to achieve a more positive relationship between the MCR and JCR, and look forward to hearing your ideas about ways of increasing the social interaction between the two.

Living Out Rep.:
Jess Suess

After three years of being at the centre of the action, living in the Holywell Manor complex, I've rejoined the real world and normal housing. Nevertheless I still want to contribute to, and naturally exploit, all that Balliol MCR and the Holywell Manor complex have to offer… and since I can't be selfish all the time, I want to help other do the same. Basically my job is to represent the interests of people who don't like in Holywell Manor to the Balliol MCR, and to help our graduates who do live out with, well anything really. The main goals I would like to achieve this year are to provide lockers in the Manor for people who live out, and help finish the lounge and kitchen areas downstairs, since common areas are the life-blood of out-livers.

General Committee:
Adrian Groves

Adrian's back for another year of MCR committee (having been Secretary last year)... now, with no fixed responsibilities. Yippee!

General Committee:
Steve Rayan

A patriotic Canadian and PhD student in mathematics, I can be counted on to help the MCR with general things, in a general way. Generally, that's my job.

General Committee:
Andrew Whitby

I'm Andrew, a 2nd year MPhil Economist, and I'm General Committee. (I would like to have been Field-Marshal Committee but apparently that is both unconstitutional and insubordinate.) I'm your guy for anything that is not Specific, or anything that is Specifically General. You'll find me hanging around Martin Building, the Social Sciences building or the Megaron. I'll be the guy making bad General puns.

General Committee:
