College-Based Welfare
Welfare support is available from many different sources, such as the MCR Welfare Rep, the MCR President, the Assistant Praefectus, the Dean and Chaplain and the Praefectus. The MCR welfare rep is elected to be a friendly pair of ears. They should also be in a good position to let you know what support is available, so can be a good first point of call. They also keep the welfare cupboard, located in the first floor centre wing bathroom, stocked with sanitary products, condoms and lubricant.
For main-site college-based support, Douglas Dupree is a very good bet. Similarly, many of the issues the Nurse deals with border on the pastoral.
Peer support
Student Peer Supporters are available at participating colleges and departments to talk with you informally about anything that is concerning you. All Peer Supporters have been carefully selected and trained to take up this role, and receive ongoing support and supervision through the University Counselling Service.
The programme was developed in recognition of the essential role students play in supporting and encouraging one another on a day-to-day basis throughout their time at university. Students are likely to look to each other first for help in thinking through issues and for emotional support but there are times when this can leave friends feeling out of their depth, unsure how best to help but anxious about seeking advice for fear of betraying trust. The Peer Support Programme seeks to better equip students for this role, enabling them to feel more confident in supporting their peers and more aware of the professional support networks available to them and how to access these. The Peer Support Programme has been embraced by a University Review as an integral part of the University’s welfare provision. More information at:
