Food in the MCR

Hall

Hall is located on the main site and it serves lunch and dinner at a reasonable cost. Lunch is 12.30-1.30 and Dinner 6.30-7.30 (except Tuesdays, when normal Hall is served from 6.15-7.15).

There are two options for paying for Hall:
a) You can deposit money on the University Card, or pay by cash at the till, paying the standard price for a lunch meal deal (£2.92).
b) You can pay £128.50 per term Catering Pre-Payment which includes 7 dinners per week, or £91.50 for 5 dinners per week, Monday to Friday, Weeks 1-8 of each term. You must sign up for this before the start of term (in 2009, by 25 September).

Note that Catering Pre-Payment only represents good value if you intend to eat in Hall nearly every day (for the 7 day plan) or every weekday (for the 5 day plan). If, for example, you eat in Hall an average of 6 days a week, you would be better off with a prepayment plan (6 nights / week x 8 weeks / term x £2.80 = £134.40, compared with £128.50), but only just. Considering that certain activities (in particular rowing) often having training sessions that make eating at Hall difficult, and that "Tuesday Hall" (see below), exchange dinners and other social events will take you away from regular Hall, it may be worth waiting a term before committing to a plan.

Most Tuesdays during term there is "Tuesday Hall". These are semi-formal dinners. The dress is jacket and tie for men, equivalent for ladies. The cost is £10 to yourself and any guests you bring, all batteled to you. Gowns are not worn. These are lovely occasions at a very decent price and will be advertised over the maillist.

N. B. Hall is only open during term time. Outside of term time you can eat down the road at Linacre. You pay cash but must show your BodCard. They are closed for only a few weeks in the year.

Kitchens

There are also a number of well-equipped kitchenettes throughout the Holywell complex that are shared among graduates. These all feature fridge/freezers, hobs, ovens, microwaves, kettles and toasters. College does not provide plates and cookware for use in kitchenettes, but there are always lots of communal dishes available.

For larger cooking parties, the new kitchen in the cockpit is very suitable. Additionally, there should be a new large kitchen in Dellal very soon.
