President's Welcome
Welcome to the Balliol MCR!
It is no hyperbole to suggest—nay, state—that Balliol College is among the oldest, the most prestigious and dynamic academic institutions in Oxford, and indeed across the United Kingdom. We also boast, however, one of the most active graduate communities: numbering more than 300, Balliol’s graduates enjoy a uniquely active social and collegiate community, based at the beautiful Holywell Manor.
This dual identity—the academic and the social—characterises the graduate community of Balliol. We comprise not only many recent graduates furthering their education, but also young professionals returning to study after time in industry and various sectors. As a result, ours is a uniquely dynamic community, where the social and intellectual thrive together. Our packed social agenda, with widely famed BOPs, exchange dinners, formal hall dinners and Megaron bar sessions, is balanced with a stimulating intellectual environment. Graduates come from far and wide—intellectually and geographically—to meet and mingle in the Manor, sharing ideas, ideals and ideologies across the bar, over coffee in the MCR, over among the cherry blossoms in the garden.
In the upcoming academic year, graduates also look forward to the opening of Balliol’s St. Cross archive, housed in a medieval church adjacent to the Manor. This collection comprises medieval manuscripts dating from 1276, printed books and modern personal papers and correspondence.
The MCR committee comprises graduates from across a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, ensuring the interests of our community are well represented to the College and the University. New graduates—or ‘freshers’—are welcome to participate in their MCR at the committee level, and we encourage any one with initiatives to step forward and contribute to their community here at Balliol.
Balliol truly is one of the greatest colleges at Oxford: please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to find out more about our MCR.
I look forward to welcoming new students to Balliol this coming academic year.
